A purpose-built wine cellar should protect a collection for years to come. For one Sunshine Coast homeowner, however, a substantial investment in a cellar constructed during their new home build quickly became a source of frustration and concern.
Within a relatively short period, the cellar began experiencing mould growth, excessive condensation and deterioration of the stored wine. The client contacted The Wine Cellar Company (TWCC) to investigate the cause and determine whether the cellar could be repaired.
Project Overview
Client: Private Sunshine Coast homeowner
Location: Sunshine Coast, Queensland
Project type: Investigation and complete rectification of an existing wine cellar
Rectification period: August to September 2026
Engagement: Inspection, technical report, remedial design and complete cellar reconstruction
The Challenge
The original cellar had been constructed as part of the client’s new home by a builder who had represented that they were experienced in wine cellar construction.
Despite the significant investment, the cellar did not perform as required. The client reported:
- Mould growth within the cellar
- Persistent condensation
- Moisture-related deterioration
- Concerns about the condition and protection of the wine collection
- Poor performance from the climate-control system
TWCC was initially engaged to undertake a detailed inspection and provide a report on the cellar’s construction and performance.
Our assessment identified several fundamental issues:
- The insulation was inadequate for a climate-controlled wine cellar.
- Effective air sealing and vapour control had not been incorporated.
- The climate-control system and associated air distribution had not been installed correctly.
- The glazing was not suitable for the temperature and humidity differences created by a refrigerated wine cellar.
- Gaps, penetrations and construction details allowed unwanted heat and moisture movement.
- A minor source of external water ingress was also discovered during the rectification works.
These issues were interconnected. Replacing or servicing the climate-control unit alone would not have solved the problem because the cellar envelope itself was unable to maintain stable conditions.
Why the Client Chose TWCC
Following the inspection, TWCC provided the client with a clear explanation of why the cellar was failing and what would be required to create a reliable, long-term solution.
Unfortunately, there was no effective partial repair. The existing cellar needed to be carefully dismantled and reconstructed correctly.
After the client’s dispute with the original contractor was resolved, TWCC was engaged to complete the rectification.
The client selected TWCC because of our specialist knowledge of climate-controlled cellar construction and our ability to manage the complete process, including the cellar envelope, climate-control system, glazing and cabinetry.
The Rectification
The existing cabinetry, linings, glazing and mechanical components were carefully removed to allow the underlying construction to be assessed and rebuilt.
The rectification works included:
- Protecting the surrounding home and access areas before work commenced
- Removing the failed internal wall and ceiling linings
- Addressing identified moisture-entry points
- Reconstructing and preparing the internal cellar framework
- Installing an appropriate insulated cellar envelope
- Sealing joins, openings and service penetrations to create continuous air and vapour control
- Correcting the climate-control installation and air-distribution arrangement
- Reconfiguring and commissioning the control system
- Removing, modifying and reinstalling the existing cabinetry
- Replacing the unsuitable glazing with a purpose-designed heated glazing system
- Reinstalling lighting, controls, doors, panels and finishing components
- Testing the cellar’s temperature and operating performance
- Completing final detailing, cleaning and quality checks
The work was performed inside an established home, making protection, dust control and cleanliness essential throughout the project. The team used controlled work zones and careful extraction methods, and thoroughly cleaned the area after each stage.
Overcoming the Challenges
Rectifying an existing cellar is often more complex than constructing a new one. The team needed to work within the constraints of the original room while coordinating repaired cabinetry, replacement glazing, mechanical services and electrical connections.
Further challenges emerged as the cellar was dismantled, including concealed services, a minor water leak and existing components that required adjustment before they could be reused.
Each issue was assessed and addressed as it became accessible. Close coordination between TWCC’s construction team and specialist trades allowed the cellar envelope, climate-control system, glazing and cabinetry to work together as one complete system.
The Result
The completed cellar was transformed from a mould-affected and unreliable space into a properly constructed, professionally commissioned climate-controlled environment.
Final testing confirmed that the system was operating within the intended temperature range, with the controller and independent readings producing consistent results. The cabinetry and glazing were reinstated, the cellar was fully detailed, and the surrounding areas were left clean and tidy.
Most importantly, the client now has a cellar designed to protect their wine collection rather than place it at risk.
The Lesson
A climate-controlled wine cellar is not simply an air-conditioned room. Insulation, vapour control, air sealing, glazing, refrigeration and cabinetry must be designed to operate as one coordinated system.
If any of these elements are overlooked, Queensland’s warm and humid climate can quickly expose the weaknesses through condensation, mould, excessive energy use and damage to the wine collection.
This project demonstrates why specialist wine cellar knowledge is critical from the beginning—and why addressing the underlying construction is essential when repairing a failed cellar.
Considering a New Cellar or Experiencing Problems With an Existing One?
If your cellar is showing signs of condensation, mould, unstable temperatures or poor climate-control performance, TWCC can undertake an inspection and provide a clear report on the likely causes and recommended solution.
Identifying the problem early can help protect your wine collection and prevent further damage to the cellar and surrounding property.
